Westchase is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Hillsborough County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 11,116. The Census area is co-extensive with the zip code that serves the area (33626).

History

Westchase was founded in 1991 with the approval of the County Commissioners of Hillsborough County. As expected, the community grew very rapidly and it serves somewhat as a "Northwest Extension" of Town 'n' Country.

Geography

Westchase is located at 28°3'10" North, 82°36'41" West (28.052799, -82.611352)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 28.0 km² (10.8 mi²). 27.8 km² (10.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 11,116 people, 4,177 households, and 3,207 families residing in the community. The population density was 399.2/km² (1,034.2/mi²). There were 4,742 housing units at an average density of 170.3/km² (441.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the community was 86.91% White, 5.06% African American, 0.10% Native American, 4.08% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.15% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 11.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,177 households out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the community the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 43.1% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the community was $79,561, and the median income for a family was $88,036. Males had a median income of $55,962 versus $38,300 for females. The per capita income for the community was $37,630. 2.4% of the population and 1.7% of families were below the poverty line. 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. Westchase is one of the wealthiest areas in Hillsborough County.

The Community

Westchase is organized into 28 neighborhoods...or villages. Some of these villages are organized into even smaller subsections. Each of these villages and their "sub-villages," are represented by a village committee. The village committee then elects a voting member that represents and village homeowners in the Westchase Community Association. Some of the villages also have a website that is maintained by a "village webmaster." Residents are encouraged to participate by attending website committee meetings or providing material to help improve the website to the webmaster.
