Hanover is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,638.

The Town of Hanover lies in the northeast corner of Chautauqua County.

History

The first settler arrived around 1802. The Town of Hanover was formed in 1812 from part of the Town of Pomfret. The size of Hanover was reduced later to form new towns.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.1 km² (49.5 mi²). 127.7 km² (49.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) and US Route 20 pass through the north part of the town. New York State Route 39 crosses the center of the town.

Adjacent towns and areas

On the north, the town borders Lake Erie and on the northeast, Cattaraugus Creek, which is the boundary of Erie County, New York. The east town line is the border of Cattaraugus County. The south town line is shared with Town of Villenova, and the west town line is shared with the Town of Sheridan.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,638 people, 2,975 households, and 2,040 families residing in the town. The population density was 59.8/km² (154.9/mi²). There were 3,501 housing units at an average density of 27.4/km² (71.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.82% White, 0.48% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,975 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,567, and the median income for a family was $44,057. Males had a median income of $38,034 versus $22,754 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,654. 10.6% of the population and 6.3% of families were below the poverty line. 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

  • Keaches Corners -- A community north of Forestville.
  • Nashville -- A location on Route 39 near the center of the town.
  • Parcells Corners -- A hamlet in the southeast part of town on Route 39.
  • Smith Mills -- A hamlet in the easter part of the town on Route 93.
  • Silver Creek -- The Village of Silver Creek, in the northeast corner of the town.
  • Sunset Bay -- A lakeside hamlet in the northeast part of the town.
