Valley Stream is a village located in Nassau County, New York in the United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the village had a total population of 36,368. If you include South Valley Stream, and North Valley Stream the total population is 57,795 as of the 2000 census.
The Village of Valley Stream is inside the southwest part of the Town of Hempstead along the border with Queens. Valley Stream is known for having a large Italian-American community, as well as a sizable Jewish population. In recent years, large numbers of Hispanics, Indians, and Pakistanis have moved to the area.
Geography
Valley Stream is located at 40°39'53" North, 73°42'12" West (40.664780, -73.703327)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²). 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.86% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 36,368 people, 12,484 households, and 9,600 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,081.9/km² (10,569.5/mi²). There were 12,688 housing units at an average density of 1,424.1/km² (3,687.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 78.79% White, 7.46% African American, 0.15% Native American, 6.86% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.15% from other races, and 2.54% from two or more races. 12.27% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 12,484 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the village the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $64,750, and the median income for a family was $72,585. Males had a median income of $57,094 versus $35,260 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,636. 3.0% of the population and 2.2% of families were below the poverty line. 0.9% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
