Simrishamn Municipality is a municipality in Skåne in southern Sweden where the Scania town Simrishamn (pop. 6,300) is seat.
Geography
The landscape south and west of Simrishamn is mainly open and very flat farmland, in most places you can see for several miles in all directions. To the north of Simrishamn the landscape is broken up by small forests and gently sloping hills. The coastline directly south and north of Simrishamn is stony to a great degree, but turns into broad beaches with white sand further away. The scenic Stenshuvud National Park is located by the shore, within the municipal borders, and is one of the geographically more fascinating places in Skåne.
Municipal towns
One of the picturesque small villages in Simrishamn municipality is Kivik, some 15 km north of the Simrishamn village. Kivik is famous for its Market (Kiviks Marknad) which takes place on the third Wednesday in July. This market, with a medieval history, is one of the three main traditional markets in Skåne (Sjöbo and Hörby being the others) and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Also within the municipal borders, in its south-western part, is the Glimmingehus. This is the best preserved medieval fortress of Scandinavia, and one of the best known locations in the province.
