Sheldon is a census-designated place located in Harris County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,831.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²). 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Harris County Police Service

The area does not have its own police service, but is locally served by the Harris County Precinct 3 Constable's Office, under the direction of Constable Ken Jones and is also served by the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,831 people, 546 households, and 447 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 274.0/km² (709.0/mi²). There were 600 housing units at an average density of 89.8/km² (232.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 78.92% White, 2.73% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 14.64% from other races, and 2.89% from two or more races. 34.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 546 households out of which 46.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.1% were non-families. 13.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.35 and the average family size was 3.61.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 5.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $42,981, and the median income for a family was $45,219. Males had a median income of $31,071 versus $26,599 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,309. 11.7% of the population and 9.0% of families were below the poverty line. 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Education

Sheldon residents are zoned to Sheldon Independent School District.
