A bomb threat may be considered to be a form of terrorism and is generally defined as a threat to detonate an explosive device within, or near, a building. Typically delivered by phone, it is reckoned that the great majority of such threats are pranks. People that prank bomb threats generally have to serve prison time.

The decision on whether or not to evacuate an area or building, depending on the perceived seriousness of the threat, may be made by local controlling authorities or those in charge of the targeted facility based on the advice from bomb disposal experts.

Those convicted of school bomb threats by students will most likely be expelled.
