Slipknot is the second album (Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. is their first, but was not recorded on a label) by musical band Slipknot, considered by most critics a nu metal album. The album was released on June 29, 1999 by Roadrunner Records. A digipak version was released on March 7, 2000, followed by a "Clean" version (with swear words dubbed out) on March 14; the digipak was re-released on August 9.

The cover of the album simply shows the band members in their masks and boilersuits: the anti image for which the band would become famous.

In 2001 Q magazine named Slipknot as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums Of All Time. The album evolved from Slipknot(Demo) Demo (1995).

The digipak version of the album added "Get This", "Interloper (Demo)", and "Despise (Demo)". The first US version of the album had "Frail Limb Nursery" and "Purity" in place of "Me Inside." They were replaced due to a legal issue over a fake news story that Corey Taylor (vocals) found on the internet.

Trivia

  • Although James Root is credited as a guitarist alongside Mick Thompson, all of the tracks except "Purity" were recorded by former guitarist, Josh Brainard. Josh left shortly after recording the album and it's he who appears on the album cover, not James. "Purity" later was only distributed on a limited amount of CDs due to a lawsuit by Brainard that threatened the band.
  • The title "742617000027" comes from the UPC of their first album, Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat.
  • The album is often referred by fans as "Slipknot S/T", much like Metallica's eponymous album is called the "Black Album", probably to avoid misunderstanding when talking about Slipknot or their first widely released album.
  • A slightly different version of "Wait and Bleed", called "Wait and Bleed (Terry Date Mix)" is featured on the Scream 3 soundtrack.
