Current revision
Chansey (ラッキー Lucky in Japanese, Chaneira in German and Leveinard in French) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise.
Chansey's name is mostly likely a deliberate misspelling of "chancy," referring to the popular belief that this Pokémon brings luck to its owner. The original Japanese name comes from the English word "Lucky." In the beta, it was known as Lucky.

Biology
Chansey is a rare, egg-shaped, pink Pokémon with much fatty tissue along its sides, alongside hairlock-like outgrowths on its head. It has a pouch on its belly as a marsupial animal would, and in this pouch it always keeps a special egg. These eggs (several of which are laid daily by the Chansey) are both nutritious and delicious to the point where they are eagerly consumed even by people who do not have an appetite.
Chansey is a symbol of kindness and welfare, and for good reason. In the wild, Chansey are often found taking care of the young of other Pokémon species for various reasons. It also is said that Chansey brings happiness to its owners, partly because it is uncommon and difficult to catch with a Pokeball. For that reason, it is frequently sought out and poached.
All Chansey seem to be female. Because of this, it might be possible that it breeds through parthenogenesis but it probably just naturally lays the eggs.(though it can breed with male Pokémon of other species in the game).
In the video games
In the Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Yellow versions, Chansey is found in the Safari Zone and in the Unknown Dungeon. In Pokémon Gold and Silver and Pokémon Crystal, Chansey is found at Routes 13, 14, and 15. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Chansey is found again at the Safari Zone, in the Area 2 and Center zones. A Chansey can also be snagged from Cipher Peon Leden in Citadark Isle in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. In all these cases, Chansey appears rarely, and in the Safari zone, it is extremely hard to catch with Safari balls. Also, Chansey is not found in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, or Pokémon Colosseum, and therefore must be traded to these versions from FireRed and LeafGreen.
Chansey has a storied past in the above Pokémon games thanks to its extremely lopsided statistics and movepool. In the first generation of games, Chansey had the highest number of hit points of all 151 then-existing Pokémon, alongside a high Special rating, offset by a below average speed rating and the lowest Attack and Defense statistics in Pokémon (any version). Used as a damage sponge, Chansey was believed to be useless as a battler in Pokémon competitions because of its limited selection of offensive moves until the September 2, 2000 Pokémon United States Championships in Seattle, where champion Ian Garvey used his Chansey (nicknamed "Molly") to defeat the competition with the moves Seismic Toss, Thunder Wave, Minimize, and Softboiled.
Starting with the 2nd-generation Gold and Silver versions, Chansey became obscure primarily because it received an enhanced, evolved form, the notoriously durable Blissey. Also, with the splitting of the Special statistic into Special Attack and Special Defense, Chansey's high Special Attack became dramatically downgraded into a very low statistic. Likewise, Chansey continued to be obscure with the release of the 3rd-generation GBA versions, though both Chansey and Blissey gained access to the Natural Cure and Serene Grace abilities. However, because Blissey is so effective a damage sponge and disliked by opponents to the point where trainers may automatically quit a battle the moment a Blissey is sent out, Chansey is occasionally used as a fair alternative.
When caught in Pokémon Firered and Leafgreen, there is a 5% chance that Chansey will be holding the rare Lucky Egg item, which doubles the experience points gained by a Pokémon holding it in battle.
Chansey has minor cameos in the Super Smash Bros. series. In both games, Chansey can appear from a thrown Pokeball, where it will use Softboiled to scatter eggs around the stage that may contain items or explosives. Chansey is therefore available as a collectible trophy. In addition, in the original game Chansey can appear in the Saffron City stage to heal a combatant standing in front of a certain door, while in the sequel Super Smash Bros. Melee
Because of a leaked TCG image (see below), there is reason to believe that Chansey will get a pre-evolutiobary form in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.
In the animé
Chansey appears frequently as a nursing pokémon in Pokémon Centers and hospitals. They are often seen taking care of a pokemon. During the early anime, when Pikachu gets hurt, a Chansey presents him to Ash fully-healed. Template:Pokexpand
In other properties
In the card game
Image:Chansey tcg.jpg In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Chansey can be found in eight sets: Base Set, Base Set 2, Neo Destiny, Expedition, Aquapolis, Ex Ruby & Sapphire, EX FireRed & LeafGreen, and EX Unseen Forces. Of these, three are holographic rares, two are rare, two are uncommon, and one is common.
The Base Set Chansey was one of two Pokemon in the game with the (then) highest possible Hit Point value of 120 (the other being Charizard). This compounded with its basic Pokemon status and its Scrunch move made Chansey an effective wall.
In a leaked pokemon TCG picture, there is a card with what looks like chansey's egg with a mouth and eyes and an (empty) egg pouch. Also, someone who found the picture was able to roughly translate its name to Lucky.
