Maasmechelen is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1st, 2005 Maasmechelen had a total population of 36,175. The total area is 76.28 km² which gives a population density of 474.25 inhabitants per km².

Cultural events
One of the annual cultural events is the carnival-parade. People with masks are entertaining the visitors. Carnival occurs on November 11.

Sports
The region has produced quite a few sports personalities:
- Patrick Stevens from Maasmechelen is an athlete (runner, olympic finalist on 200 meters in 1996);
- Heidi Rakels from Maasmechelen is a famous Belgian judoka;
- Stefan Everts from Neeroeteren has been several times the world motocross champion;
- Kim Clijsters has been ranked number one in the WTA classement (tennis).
Maasmechelen hosts the football club named K. Patro Maasmechelen.
