- IJ can also stand for the Institute for Justice.
The letter combination IJ can stand for the following:
- A common typographical representation of the IJ (letter IJ), is a distinct letter of the Dutch alphabet, similar to the Y, or I sound in English. For example the word 'ijs' in Dutch is pronounced ‘/ɛi/’, which roughly sounds like ‘ice’ (and actually means ice). When the IJ combination is at the start of a sentence or a name, both letters in the combination should be capitals (e.g. IJssel river).
When used to represent this letter, it can stand for:
- The name of a body of water near Amsterdam in the Netherlands: see IJ (bay).
- The name of several smaller streams in the Netherlands.
