A few Wikipedians have gotten together to make some suggestions about how we might organize various images in Wikipedia articles. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the below guidelines may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

Scope

This WikiProject aims primarily to enhance the presence of various forms of visual illustration on Wikipedia. This includes:

  • Photographs
  • Drawings or paintings
  • Computer-generated renderings
  • Any other still-image graphical illustration

Participants

  • boffy_b - Diagrams, illustrations, photographs, correction/repair/colouring of existing images. Ask on my talk page and I'll see what I can do.
  • David Remahl - It is fun to make computer generated graphics, especially procedure generated illustrations. If something is too tedious to do by hand, I can do it in Mathematica or write a small program.
  • Daniel C. Boyer - I'm open to requests for illustrations
  • DrBob - Can do technical illustrations, open for requests on my talk page.
  • Fastfission - happy to do work on vector based 2-D illustrations, I'm also especially happy with re-doing pixellated, MS Word-Draw style illustrations in Illustrator.
  • helix84 — if you have a (copyrighted) rastered illustration, I'll make a free .svg from it in Inkscape.
  • Kiera - I'm a painter and sketch artist. I'm familiar with the mathmatics and theory underlying image/signal processing and various computer graphics/vision algorithms. I'd be happy to illustrate just about anything that would benefit from a pencil drawing; I'm willing and able to make Visio and Illustrator diagrams, and welcome mathmatical diagrams from the fields of lin. algebra, computational geometry, and calculus.
  • Jeff Medkeff - I can take photos, esp. of landmarks and other Alaskan things between Fairbanks and Homer. Request via e-mail (preferred), or my talk page.
  • Josh Lee — I can make illustrations, technical drawings, and doodles with Inkscape.
  • Maclyn611 - open to requests for charts (such as Eskimo kinship chart) and related items.
  • Mark Dingemanse — maps, diagrams, 2d vector illustration (see gallery for examples). I'm open to requests on my talk page.
  • Neutrality 03:02, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • —Noldoaran (Talk) 06:04, Mar 4, 2004 (UTC)
  • Reverie - I am a painter as well as a vector artist. I'm familiar with mathematics up to the electrical engineering level and can grasp abstract concepts well. I'm more than happy to do additional research related with illustrating your topic of interest. Requests welcome on my talk page.
  • Smack - I can do computer drawings; see my user page for a list of pictures I've made; please put requests on User talk
  • Stevertigo - I'm open to requests on my talk page for line-drawing portrait illustrations, and various others.
  • Stib - I'm happy to take requests for 3D or 2D illustrations, I am particularly interested if you need any animations made.
  • Wapcaplet - Taking requests for diagrams or illustrations, especially of the 3D or vector variety. See my user page for examples.
  • Wgsimon - Graphs, charts, diagrams, technical drawings on request.
  • Xerxes2K - Specialized in diagrams, charts and graphs. I'b be happy to fulfil your requests on my talk page.
  • Agateller - 2D illustrations of abstract concepts mostly, vector or bitmap

Goals

The goals of this WikiProject include:

  • Finding articles that would benefit by some form of illustration. Wikipedia:Requested pictures should be used for this purpose, but a more structured system for filing such requests may be necessary in the future.
  • Determining the form of illustration that may be most beneficial to the article. Wikipedia:Choosing appropriate illustrations gives some guidelines on this subject. For example, would a photograph or a line drawing be better? Would a technical-looking image or a more generalized, simple image be better?
  • Assigning requested illustrations, or several similar requested illustrations, to Wikipedians. The assignment of illustrations to users is not strictly necessary, but it may be useful for groups of similar images (e.g. Birds) that could be fulfilled by one or two people. For illustrations requiring substantial time and work (hand-drawn or computer-generated illustrations, for example), it may help to prevent overlapping work on similar illustrations. For now, Wikipedia:Requested pictures can be used to make note of who is working on what images.

An alternative approach

It might be possible to approach the task of illustrating Wikipedia from a different perspective. While some wikipedians have already searched various public domain image resources and tried to use them, there is one source of such images that Wikipedia has not tapped into deeply enough. The source is personal photograph collections. Its main benefit is variety, unmatched by most free image repositories and rivalling professional image services, such as Corbis. Another benefit is that these images can usually be licensed to Wikipedia under a Free license or released into public domain.

It can be suggested that a small project is launched as a part of Project Illustration or separately to ask Wikipedia users to browse through their personal collections in search of interesting quality photos and upload them to relevant articles.

Three examples of this approach in action can be seen here:
