The Japanese Academy Awards (officially "Prize") have been held since 1977 to reward excellence in Japanese film. Award categories are similar to the American Academy Awards.
Many critics have been appalled by the movies that are chosen some years and the seeming focus on only blockbusters. Critics states that films that have done extremely well criticaly fail to even get nominated. For example, Nobody Knows (2004) received only one nomination for best supporting actress (nominated to an established popular actress) despite winning best actor at Cannes Film Festival, being nominated by Japan for best foreign film at the Academy Award and being highly praised internationally.
The most prestigious award is the best picture award. Past winners are:
