Fiasco (Polish: Fiasko) (1987; ISBN 3518396749) is a science fiction novel by Stanisław Lem that deals with clashes of cultures. The book is yet another Lem's elaboration of his scepticism: in Lem's opinion, the difficulty in communication with alien civilizations is cultural distance, rather than spatial.
The book is about an expedition sent to a distant star in order to make contact with a civilization that had been detected there. Closing in to a planet which exhibits the signs of intelligent life, the explorer spaceship Eurydika (Eurydice), attempts to contact with the denizens of the planet who draw them into a local interplanetary war. The resulting fiasco of the contact gives the book its name.Template:Sf-book-stub
