Naultinus is one of 2 genera of Gecko's in New Zealand, the other being Hoplodactylus. Species of the Naultinus genus are sometimes commonly known as "green tree Gecko's" and all species are predominantly green ( in varying shades) in colour, presumably for camouflage in their verdant habitat- indeed all species are arboreal and the fact that they are also diurnal no doubt contributes to the fact that, when present they are generally more frequently seen than their predominantly nocturnal relatives in the Hoplodactylus genus. Many species in this genus also possess prehensile tail's as an adaptation to their habitat and they are thus more reluctant than other gecko's to shed them when disturbed by a predator.
