Blue Gender is a 26-episode anime created by Ryousuke Takahashi (of Armored Trooper Votoms and Gasaraki fame) broadcast in Japan from 1999-2000.

It is the story of Yuji Kaido, an average guy who was diagnosed with a serious disease in the near future and was put into cryogenic stasis. When he wakes up, he discovers that a race of insectoid beings called "Blue" have overrun the Earth and that he may very well be the key to the survival of the human race.

Blue Gender was created by the Japanese animation studio, AIC and is distributed in the United States by FUNimation. In 2003, Blue Gender was released on American television as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. There is also a compilation movie (Blue Gender: The Warrior) available on DVD. The series was also shown on the Sci-fi channel in the UK in 2002-2003.

It is possible the Blue species and the Armored Shrike mecha were inspired by the Arachnids and Powered armor suits from Starship Troopers.

Contents

Main characters

  • Yuji Kaido - A loser by modern standards: he worked at a gas station in the near future until a life-threatening disease required him to be put into cryogenic stasis. He awoke in the future to find that the Blue have destroyed everything he knew. Voiced in Japanese by Kenji Nojima and in English by Eric Vale (Trunks from Dragon Ball Z)
  • Marlene Angel - A very cold soldier who initially finds Yuji. Her steely exterior slowly crumbles as a result of Yuji's influence and she finds the humanity that she and the other people on Second Earth lost as a result of their single-mindedness to eradicate the Blue. Voiced in Japanese by Houko Kuwashima (Sango from InuYasha, Kirika Yumura from Noir) and in English by Laura Bailey (Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, Kayko Yukimura from Yu Yu Hakusho)
  • Tony Frost - Another sleeper brought to Second Earth before Yuji. A very powerful sleeper, Yuji strives to improve himself to be able to beat Tony.
  • Alicia Whistle - Another sleeper on Second Earth who is paired with Tony. She is very young and often naive and immediately gravitates towards Yuji, seeing Marlene as an obstacle to a relationship with Yuji. Voiced by Lisa Ortiz.
  • Seno Miyagi - A high-ranking worker on Second Earth. He eventually starts a group called The Arc, who would later overthrow the "government" on Second Earth. He would later become the leader of Second Earth. Seno often helps Yuji and Marlene in completing their missions.

Summary

Episode 1 - "Oneday"

Immediatelly at the beginning of the first episode, Yuji Kaido awakens from hibernation only to see that his hibernation chamber is being carried through some unknown corridors. He experiences a series of flashbacks from his life before he went to sleep. It is revealed that he suffers from a terminal illness, but the doctors were sure that it was only a matter of time until a cure for the disease was discovered. However, the waiting could be too long, so they offered Yuji and other patients the possibility to hibernate their bodies until a cure has been found. He agreed and told his best friend that he would become a sleeper - but when he awakens, they would go see the world and travel together.

Yuji is jerked back into the present and faces the Blue for the first time. Totally confused and literally wetting himself in terror, he is unable to move and awaits his doom. At the last instant, an Armor Shrike (a mechanical combat suit) races in, killing the Blue and saving Yuji. Unable to distinguish friend from foe, he runs away, only to find a nest of the Blue. The nest itself is in fact the remnants of a hospital room, with broken hibernation chambers scattered around and sleepers curled into cocoons. Yuji remembers a girl from one of the cocoons, but then the Blue start rushing into the room and he is once again hopelessly surrounded. When all seems lost, the Armor Shrike breaks into the room, killing the Blue and saving Yuji once again. Unfortunately, the Armor Shrike pilot's helmet is broken during combat and Yuji can finally see that it is operated by a woman (Marlene Angel) and finally begins to cooperate.

During their escape from the nest they are once again attacked by the Blue, but another two members of the extraction team deal swiftly with them. As they are about to leave, a pyrotechnic expert sets explosives around the nest and after a couple of minutes, it blows up. The episode concludes with the marines and Yuji driving out and into Tokyo ruins, which was destroyed by the Blue. But so were all other cities and the present Earth is vastly different from the old Earth Yuji remembers.
