A tie-in is a product that is released and marketed to accompany another release, usually a movie or video/DVD. Tie-ins are usually released for publicity or promotional purposes, but can also supplement income to the producers or the license holders.
Common tie-in products include:
- novelisations: novel-style books based on movie scripts
- re-branding of an existing novel or book with film poster artwork (such as Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia)
- "making-of" books or television specials
- a computer or video game based on the movie
- a soundtrack, either featuring the film score, songs featured in the film, or occasionally songs "inspired by the film"
- collectable merchandise, such as action figure toys or board games
