USS Whitefish (SS-432), a Tench-class submarine, was the only submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the whitefish, a freshwater food fish closely related to the trout and salmon found in waters of the Northern Hemisphere. Her keel was to be laid down by the Cramp Shipbuilding Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but the contract for her construction was cancelled on 29 July 1944.
