Lee Craig Schoonmaker (born December 20, 1944) is the co-founder of the Expansionist Party of the United States. Also an advocate for spelling reform and gay rights activist, Schoonmaker claims to have originated the term "gay pride".
Schoonmaker filed to run for President of the United States in the 2000 election. Because the Expansionist Party was not officially recognized as a political party anywhere within the U.S., Schoonmaker filed as an Independent.
The Expansionist Party is a fringe group that advocates the territorial expansion of the United States of America by admitting countries that voluntarily agree to join the U.S. The party's ultimate goal is the unification of world government under the United States Constitution. The party claims to be a "radical centrist" party.
The party appears to be, for the most part, a one-person organization run by Schoonmaker, the party's co-founder and chairman. It does not appear to have any organization beyond its website, but aims to play a co-ordinating role with other, like-minded organizations in the U.S. and in other countries. The party decided that it did not have the resources to nominate a candidate in the 2004 presidential election. In March of 2006 he announced that he was running for mayor of Newark, New Jersey
