- For the record label created in 1969, see Chrysalis Records.
A chrysalis [Latin chrysallis, from Greek χρυσαλλίς (chrysallís), gold-coloured pupa of a butterfly, from χρυσός (chrysós) gold] is a type of pupa, a protective case within which an insect undergoes metamorphosis from a larva into the adult form. This term typically designates the pupae of butterfly species, and sometimes also moth species.
Sometimes the chrysalis is itself contained in a protective silk case called a cocoon.
- Synonym: Aurelia
