1 Utama, as it is officially known, is a popular shopping mall in Bandar Utama, a suburb of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. It is over 5 million square feet and is one of the top shopping centres in Malaysia. The new extension of the mall (popularly known as the New Wing) was officiated by the Sultan of Selangor, HRH Sultan Sharifuddin Idris Shah on April 2 2004.
Its success has caused shopping centres such as The Curve and Ikano to spring up in the immediate vicinity.
Its tenants include the supermarkets Jaya Jusco and Giant plus a number of well-known outlets including, MPH, fcuk, DKNY, Toys 'R' Us, Jaya Jusco Departmental Store, U-Parkson, Laura Ashley, Miss Selfridge, Chanel, Bose, Kodak, Pierre Cardin and M&S. There are also numerous restaurants including: A&W, Burger King, KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver's, Starbucks, Nando's and Shakey's Pizza.
1 Utama is a very popular shopping center in the area. It often became extremely crowded not long after the extension was completed. In 2004, new branches of Ikea and Tesco were built less than 5km from 1 Utama and currently provide even more opportunities for shopping in the area. Smaller shopping centres, such as Centrepoint, have thus had more competition to deal with.
There is a great deal of dispute over whether the name of the mall is "One Utama" or "1 Utama". A recent press release by the management (Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn. Bhd.) states that the official name is 1 Utama Shopping Centre and not "One Utama" or "1-Utama". This move was meant to limit the confusion of its name, although either one of the mentioned names are easily understood and cannot be confused because of their same meaning.
1 Utama was named "Shopping Complex of the Year" at the Retail World Excellence Awards 2006/07. As of 2006, a 20-storey corporate office tower and a 5-star hotel attached to the mall are planned to open within a year. <ref>Yap, Kenny (Mar. 20, 2006). "1 Utama wins platinum award", p. 21.
