This article is about the book. For the film based on this book, see Jumanji (film).

Jumanji is the title of a 1982 children's book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. It was made into a 1995 movie of the same name. Both the book and the movie are about a jungle-themed board game that has real animals and other jungle elements magically appear where the players are when they are playing. The storyline of the book is that the children playing the game must keep the house looking neat before their parents return from the opera with company. Near the end of the book, Danny and Walter Budwing are shown carrying the board game home with them, foreshadowing Zathura.

The word "Jumanji" is a Zulu word that means "many effects". [1]

Zathura, another novel written by Van Allsburg, has also been adapted to film; its story also involves a group of kids who find a magic board game, but the theme is fantasy science fiction rather than a "jungle" theme.
