Copper Country Mall

The Copper Country Mall is a shopping mall located at 47420 Highway M26 in Houghton, Michigan (actually just outside the city limits in Portage Township, Houghton County, Michigan). It is anchored by J.C.Penney and Dunham's Sports (which was originally a drugstore) and contains a five-theatre multiplex. The mall used to have Kmart and local Spurgeon's Department Store (which was later Jo-Ann Fabrics) for anchors, though both of those spaces are now empty. Though owner Developers Diversified Realty claims that Office Max is a part of the mall, the building is actually structurally separate.
Since the 2002 closure of the mall's Kmart[1], many stores in the mall have closed and its occupancy rate has declined. Questions about the future of the mall[2] have continued with the November 2004 closing of the Payless Shoes store.
In October 2004 the new CCM Gallery opened at the mall with a display of amateur photography.
In November 2005, Steve & Barry's University Sportswear opened in the old Kmart space, filling an anchor vacancy.
The mall's parking lot is the site of a seasonal farmer's market.[3]
