The 700T Series Shinkansen is a type of Shinkansen rolling stock built for Taiwan High Speed Rail. The 700T series is based on the Japanese 700 Series Shinkansen.

The 700T series marks the first time Japanese rolling stock have been exported overseas. The trains are manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Nippon Sharyo, and Hitachi, Ltd., and all of the preliminary 30 consists will be built in Japan.

On January 30, 2004, a rollout ceremony was conducted at Kawasaki Heavy Industries' Hyogo Works.

The 700T series completed a 315 km/h test in Taiwan in October 2005. The final train has been delivered to Taiwan, and multiple train running and final system integration testing will begin in March 2006.

Commercial operation of the 700T will begin in 2006, at an operation speed of 300 km/h.

Features

Although the 700T series is based on the 700 Series Shinkanen currently operating on the Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen, the following differences exist between the two types of stock:

  • To account for the expected number of users, the 700T has 12 cars in each set instead of the 16 found in Japanese services
  • To cater for 300 km/h operations, the 700T series has more powerful motors
  • Because there was dissatisfaction in Taiwan concerning the 700 Series front car nose, and because the Taiwanese railway infrastructure is based on the European system, making tunnel radii larger, the 700T series features a new nose on the front car. Due to this, the crew doors behind the crew compartments have been removed, necessitating crew entry through the passenger doors.
  • Because Taiwan has a tropical climate, the fully automated passenger doors have been semi-automated to improve the efficency of the air conditioning system. Upon arrival at a station, the crew sends a signal to the doors, which passengers can open by pressing buttons located near them.
