BBC Radio Suffolk is the BBC Local Radio service for the English county of Suffolk, commencing broadcasts on 12 April 1990. It broadcasts from its studios in St Matthews Street, Ipswich on 95.5 (Oulton, near Lowestoft), 95.9 (Aldeburgh), 103.9 (Manningtree) and 104.6 (Great Barton, four miles north-east of Bury St Edmunds) FM. The 95.9FM frequency is only recent, and had to be approved by the Netherlands government in case of interference in Holland. There is no MW frequency.
The Manningtree frequency is the strongest. The 470-foot transmitter is actually just south of Manningtree, in Essex, and indeed is one of the BBC Essex MW and BBC National FM and DAB transmitters. However, the BBC Radio Suffolk broadcasts are directional. The Great Barton transmitter also has SGR-FM on 96.4FM. The Oulton transmitter also has The Beach on 103.4FM.
In the evenings on weekdays from 7pm, until 1am, output is shared with the rest of BBC East local radio, starting with Nick Lawrence, then from 10pm Nick Risby or Keith Skues continues. Broadcasts are either from Norwich, home of Look East or from Ipswich.
