Cassavetes’ musical journey began when Robert Horlick (guitar / vocals) and Cary Henderson (drums) joined forces in 2002 to form a band; though Cassavetes was still just a glimmer in their eyes. It wasn’t until hooking up with Jay Pollard (bass) and Tyler Woodstrom (keyboard / guitar) and solidifying the line-up in 2005 that the group’s sound took shape. Prior to this Horlick and Henderson had performed in fledging indie groups, including the Life and Times, Brown Noise, but these embryonic incarnations only offered a glimpse of what lies ahead with Cassavetes. Following several local performances, the group’s sound began to evolve into a dark and off-kilter pop whir.

Funny Story, Cassavetes’ debut full-length on Atlanta’s Headphone Treats label is a dreamy and seductive blend of melancholy pop songs that are as murky as they are innovative and beautiful. Mining a deep, cerebral landscape that touches on influences ranging from Wilco to Neil Young, Modest Mouse to the Arcade Fire, Cassavetes exposes a raw nerve to slow-burning and psychedelic panoramas. Horlick’s free-associative lyrics drift over a mix of hazy, American indie rock territory amidst arrangements that are melodious and inspiring in one instance, droning and subliminal the next. The 9 songs that make up Funny Story were recorded at The Ether House by Jimmy Ether (the Young Antiques, Adam McIntyre) in Jonesboro, GA. Throughout the recording, songs like “Everything has an E” and “Move So Slow” are densely textured, inward journies that are propelled by intense contemplation. In “These Rocks” the group weaves contemplative pop hooks into a web of fading harmonic debris where Horlick’s voice funtions as just as much of a rhythmic instrument as do the bass, drums and guitar.
