Metawire

Current revision
Metawire is a project that aims to provide free shell, email, and webhosting services to any successful applicant. It was created in October 2003 by (most notably) Daniel Selans and Eric Harrison. Metawire runs on the open source OpenBSD operating system, renowned for its stability and security.
The project is non-profit and supported finanacially by donations from users, along with personal payments from the administrators.
Accounts at Metawire are free, but greater levels of service are offered to users who contribute to the community (chiefly via donations). Accounts are available on a number of domains hosted at the project, including metawire.org.
The project members offer not only support, but write and contribute open source software of their own.
Note
Just a note, I'm not an admin, but Metawire has been down for a little while, they're switching providers. They're planning to move their servers to the Hostdime data centers. They intend/ed to have it up by March 20th.
History
Until recently (early 2005), the IRC network officially used by Metawire was linked to the one used by the GNAA, but frictions between members of the two groups caused Metawire to split.
An unrelated DDoS attack in the early months of 2005 caused Metawire to lose its service provider; it was brought back online April 2005.
