The Rockford Metros were an Arena football team formed by Arena Football League founder Jim Foster for the purposes of playing a "test game" in Rockford, Illinois in the spring of 1986 at the MetroCentre. They defeated the Chicago Politicians 30-18. The test must have been successful, as the Arena Football League began operation the next spring with four teams and has operated continuously ever since. However no team was ever placed in, or apparently even proposed, for Rockford until the initiation of the minor league af2 in 2000, but in 2006, the Rock River Raptors will begin playing football in Rockford's MetroCentre in the non-Arena Football supported United Indoor Football League.
