Metoidioplasty is a variant of phalloplasty for transmen. During this procedure the clitoris is released from its "hood", and the urethra is lengthened with the labia minora to end at its tip. It does appear as a small penis.
The labia majora (see vulva) are united to form a scrotum, where prosthetic testicles can be inserted.
This procedure is much simpler than full-scale phalloplasty, and usually has much less complication. Surgery itself is considerably shorter (1-2 hours vs. 8-10 hours) and it is much cheaper. Also, an erectile prosthesis is usually not needed to achieve erection, although the erection is usually less hard than that of a cisgender male.
If only the clitoris is released from its hood, but no urethal lengthening and no formation of a scrotum is done, this is called clitoral release.
