Image:Blake.jpgBlake Stone: Aliens of Gold was one of the lesser-known cousins of the game Wolfenstein 3D. While it used the game engine, it added many new features. The shareware version of the game was released December 3, 1993.
The player is pitted against Dr. Pyrus Goldfire, a genetic engineer "genius" who is using mutants and robots to take over the Known Universe for his own deeds.
The game takes place in the 22nd Century. There are several weapons, more than in Wolfenstein 3D. It also had more features such as clipping, invisibility and auto-map tweaks. Unlike Wolfenstein, which had 10 levels, each episode was broken up into 11 levels per episode (9 standard and 2 secret). However, players could go back and forth between the levels in an episode via a lift, provided they had unlocked these levels first. This was not the first First Person game to have such a feature, but it was one of the earliest. Another feature that made the game different was non-hostile 'informant' scientists who would provide information and ammunition when spoken to. However, not all scientists were informants, and many would attack Blake and call guards.
The registered version of Blake Stone shipped from Apogee Software with a comic book. This comic book was a "Blake Stone Adventure" - to date the only title in the company's product line to do that.
In 1994, Blake Stone: Planet Strike was released. It follows up where Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold left off.
