Debridement is a medical term referring to the removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue. Often this removal is surgical, but other methods exist: mechanical, chemical, and autolytic.

In oral hygiene, debridement refers to the removal of the dental tartar that has accumulated over teeth. Debridement in this case is done using hand tools and ultrasound instruments. The ultrasound dislodges the tartar which is then removed.
