Lander University is the smallest publicly-funded four-year institution of higher learning in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It was founded in 1872 as Williamston Female College in Williamston, South Carolina. The college moved to Greenwood, South Carolina in 1904 and was renamed Lander College in honor of Samuel Lander, its founder. Lander is now a coeducational university.
The official mascot of Lander is now the Bearcat. It was changed in recent years from the Senators. An unofficial mascot is Big Blue the dog.
