History
Irvine High School opened its doors in 1976. It is one of four comprehensive high schools in the Irvine Unified School District and supports a population of 1825 students in grades 9-12. In 2000 Irvine High was awarded a full six-year term of accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Irvine High School was named a California Distinguished School by the State Board of Education and received the highest award for Excellence in Education from the U. S. Department of Education. IHS has been named a Grammy “Signature Gold” high school, recognizing the music program as one of the top ten in the nation. Family PC magazine named IHS as one of the “Top 100 Wired Schools” in the US. In 2003, Irvine High was named as one of the “Best 100 High Schools” in the nation, by Newsweek magazine.
Ninety-five percent of graduating seniors attend college; fifty percent of graduating seniors attend a four-year college or university, and forty-five percent enter a community college for transfer to a university or trade/technical school. Five percent of the graduating class go directly to work or military service.
IHS is also known for its lack of actual lunch table for its students. Instead, students sit in concrete pits or "huts". This lack of tables is intended to demolish cliques. Annually the school selects a group of seniors as Pacesetters, each of whom gets a one-page biography in the yearbook. These students are selected on global achievement (community service, extracurricular activities, scholastic excellence) rather than on GPA alone.
