Chorlton-on-Medlock is a district of Manchester immediately south of Manchester City Centre and south of the River Medlock. The districts borders are roughly Whitworth Street, Stockport Road, Hathersage Road, Moss Lane East and Boundary Lane.
It is bordered on the west by Hulme and in the east by Ardwick and should not be confused with Chorlton-cum-Hardy, another district of Manchester.
A large portion of the district is taken up by the University of Manchester campus.
In earlier times it was also known as Chorlton-upon-Medlock and, like other areas of Manchester, was a separate town. It became part of the municipal borough of Manchester when the borough was created in 1838.
The front of the former Chorlton-upon-Medlock Town Hall can be seen at its original location on Cavendish Street at All Saints. The building, with a Doric Portico dates from 1830 and was designed by Richard Lane.
Chorlton-on-Medlock was eventually incorporated into Manchester and, in 1970, the original interior was removed and a new structure added to the rear.
A red plaque on the building commemorates the Fifth Pan African Conference, which was held there from 15-21 October 1945. Decisions taken at that conference led to independence for a number of African and Caribbean countries.
