Nonato Luiz was born in Lavras da Mangabeira, Ceará, Brazil. He initiated his musical journal playing cavaquinho, a Brazilian variation of the ukulele. At that time, demonstrating a clear motivation for the popular as well as the classical, Nonato took the classical guitar as his main instrument. In 1975, Nonato was recognized with the 1st prize in the competition for classical guitar players sponsored by the Tupi TV in São Paulo.
