Sidney Lanier Middle School is a secondary school located at 2600 Woodhead Street in Houston, Texas, United States, with a ZIP code of 77098. Lanier, which is a school of the Houston Independent School District, handles grades 6 through 8.

Lanier Middle School is located in the Montrose area of Houston, and has both neighborhood and Vanguard gifted/talented programs. Lanier has the IB Middle Years Programme (of the International Baccalaureate program).

The cafeteria of Lanier Middle School has a 1950s-style "Pup Rock Cafe" sign, a spoof on Hard Rock Cafe.

Lanier's speech and debate team won three national titles, one of which being at the 2004 National Junior Forensic League Speech and Debate Championships. Their most recent title was at the newly formed Middle School Forensic League's national tournament.

Neighborhoods served

Several areas of Houston inside the 610 Loop, including Afton Oaks, Boulevard Oaks, Avalon Place, Southampton Place, Alabama Place, most of Montrose, most of Upper Kirby, and the upscale neighborhood of River Oaks, are zoned to Lanier. The Greenway Condominiums are also zoned to Lanier.

School uniform

All Lanier students as of 2005 are required to wear a school uniform consisting of a monogrammed LMS polo shirt purchased at the school and a pair of khaki bottoms (trousers, shorts, or skirts).

Feeder patterns

Elementary schools that feed into Lanier include all of River Oaks, Will Rogers (which will close before fall 2006), and Wilson, and parts of Pilgrim, Poe, and Roberts. Part of St. George Place Elementary School will feed into Lanier once it opens.

All students who are zoned to Lanier attend Lamar High School.

Some students in the Vanguard program at Lanier apply to gifted and talented and advanced academic programs at other schools such as Bellaire High School and Carnegie Vanguard High School.

Location

Lanier is located in the middle of Houston's Montrose neighborhood. Lanier is nearby single family houses and a coffeeshop that Lanier students frequent. Several antique shops, a convenience store, and a few restaurants are near Lanier Middle School.
