In the fictional Star Trek universe, the "Amoeba" is an alien lifeform encountered in the original Star Trek episode "The Immunity Syndrome". It is a space-borne single-celled organism that dwarfs the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). The amoeba destroyed the USS Intrepid (NCC-1631). Able to reproduce itself much like an Earth-based amoeba, it represented a dangerous threat to the galaxy. This was especially due to the fact that it absorbed energy and life force from all other life forms it encountered. To confront this, the Enterprise crew attached an antimatter charge to the amoeba's nucleus and detonated it, thereby stopping its rampage.
