FC Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukrainian: Шахтар Донецьк, a.k.a. Shakhtyor Donetsk) is a Ukrainian professional football club, playing in Donetsk city, the capital of Donetsk region.

History overview

The team has played as Stakhanovets, Shakhtyor (since 1946) and FC Shakhtar since 1992.

The team Shakhtar’s inception took place in May 1936. It was firstly named Stakhanovets after Alexei Stakhanov, a legendary coal-miner in Donbass distinguished for his prominently hard work. The first success for the team was in 1951, when Shakhtar became third-placed in the USSR League.

The Miners’ country team has always been famous for its willing disposition, team’s identity, and never-say-die attitude. Beginning in the 1960s FC Shakhtar under Oleg Oshenkov’s Coaching three times became USSR Cup Finalists, twice becoming its holder (1961 and 1962). It was called “ A Cup Team” after Shakhtar’s success in the cup winning. But The Miners’ most spectacular achievements happened from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s.

In 1975 FC Shakhtar won the runner-up place in the USSR League and got the right to play for the USSR in EuroCups. In 1978 FC Shakhtar was third-placed team in the USSR League. And a year after, in 1979, Vladimir Salkov passed his baton to Viktor Nosov and FC Shakhtar was titled as one of the prize-holders. The team took the honorable second place and its captain – striker Vitaliy Starukhin – was named the best player and the best forward in the USSR League (26 goals scored).

FC Shakhtar twice, in 1980 and 1983, brought a crystal USSR Cup to Donbass. And in 1984 it won over FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in a USSR Super-Cup match.

In the new independent Ukrainian history FC Shakhtar is, with Dynamo Kyiv, one of domestic football leaders. The team has several times become the Ukrainian League runner-up, five times won the Ukrainian Cup (1995, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2004). In 2002 it became the National Champion with Italian Coach Nevio Scala.

Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov has run FC Shakhtar since 1996. The Club President set his aim to bring Shakhtar to the European level.

In 1999 an FC Shakhtar Football academy was opened and nowadays it hosts around 3000 young players' football training with its branches. The same year a Sports Training Complex Kirsha, considered to be one of the best in Europe, was set in operation.

FC Shakhtar is about to build a new stadium, Stadion Shakhtyor. The old one – the central Stadion Shakhtar was built in 1936, and reconstructed four times (last time in 2000, when FC Shakhtar won in the UCL Group Stage).

Logo history

FC Shakhtar received their first logo in 1936. It was a blue hexagon with a red skirt, whose C letter was crossed with a coal hammer. In 1946, when the sports society and the team were renamed from Stakhanovets into Shakhtar, the club logo acquired the signature ДСО «Шахтер» and a picture of a gob pile and pile-driver.

In the mid. 60-s two crossed hammers appeared in the center and a signature «Шахтер» Донецк around the logo. Approximately since that time (except for several seasons at the beginning of 90-s) the logo has been on the players' T-shirts.

1989 an artist Viktor Savilov on the event of the club restructuring offered a draft variant of a logo with elements of the ball and pith.

Today's emblem was added to the kit in 1997.
