The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 began with a set of national protests in the China, which occurred between April 15, 1989 and June 4, 1989, centered at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The protests were part of a conflict between students and antigovernment demonstrators and the Chinese Communist Party. After several weeks, a decision was made to forcibly remove the protesters, and an estimated 2,600 people died in the ensuing conflict.
