Cullen Baker, was a desperado whose gang killed hundreds of people, including many former slaves, after the American Civil War. Like many of the gun thugs who operated after the war, Baker was regarded as a hero by some, but his record shows a merciless killer who murdered anyone who displeased him. Although he wrapped himself in the mantle of the defeated south, Baker was merely a murderer and thug. Baker operated from the Sulphur River bottoms near Bright Star, Arkansas. Authorities credit him officially with killing at least 30 people. Unlike the romanticized versions of his exploits, reality was he killed most of them from ambush or in the back, and many with a shotgun. He was killed by a pursuing posse in January 1869.
