Current revision

Anneka Rice (born 4 October 1958 in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales) is a former British television presenter. She has three children; Thomas (Tom), 17, Josh, 15, and eight-year-old Sam [1]. She was once married to showbiz producer Nick Allott. Born Anne Rice, she had to change her name when she joined the British actors union Equity, as somebody had already registered that name [2].

Early career

Rice started her TV career as a trainee PA working on The World Today for the BBC World Service [3] . At age 19, Rice moved to Hong Kong where she presented the news on English language television station TVB Pearl. Upon returning to the UK three years later, she worked as a secretary in the BBC Children's department.

In 1981, she appeared as Annie Rice in the TV series "Frankie Howerd Strikes Again". In September of the following year, she appeared in an episode of Strangers, also credited as Annie Rice [4] .

Treasure Hunt

In 1983, she landed her first major TV job as the jump-suited, constantly-in-motion skyrunner in Treasure Hunt which was hosted by former BBC newsman Kenneth Kendall. Cameraman Graham Berry was nominated for three BAFTA awards for his camerawork on Treasure Hunt, of which he won one in 1985 [5] . Helicopter pilot Keith Thompson went on to become a minor celebrity, as did Berry [6] . Rice left the show in 1988, to be replaced by former tennis player Annabel Croft [7] . Treasure Hunt was also nominated for a BAFTA award in 1986 in the category "Best Light Entertainment Programme".

Other appearances

In 1986, Rice was awarded the "Rear of the Year" award via The Sun newspaper [8] [9] ; an unsurprising award, since her posterior had feature so much in the lens of Berry's camera.

After hosting the BBC's Children In Need appeal, Rice launched her own programme Challenge Anneka in 1989, a series which was to run for another 5 years.

During an appearance on Noel's House Party, Anneka was famously gunged whilst pretending to speak on her mobile phone.

Sabbatical

In the mid-1990s, Rice decided to quit TV to spend time with her husband and three children; and spent five years studying painting at Chelsea College of Art.

Return To The Limelight

She returned to TV in a co-producer role in September 2001 when she was approached by the ABC network in the US to produce a new series based on Challenge Anneka (which Rice held the rights to) to be called Challenge America. It was hosted by Erin Brockovich [10] .

British comedy sketch-show, 'The Fast Show', included a sketch in one of their episodes entitled 'Memories of Anneka Rice', in which "close friends" failed to remember her, and gave conflicting views of this seemingly-forgotten Z-lister.

As well as all her TV and radio work, Rice has also written books on skiing and scuba-diving. In 2005, she endorsed a line of anti-aging products which claims to make you look 10 years younger [11] .

Returning to the limelight, Rice had the lead role in The Vagina Monologues which played at Birmingham Hippodrome from January 31 to February 4, 2006.
