The 'Newcastle-under-Lyme Canal was a 6 mile (10 km) stretch of canal, built in two parts. The first, linking the town with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stoke-on-Trent was granted its Act of Parliament in 1795 and was completed in 1800. The second part, completed soon after linked the town to Sir Nigel Gresley's Canal. The canal's main cargo was coal.
The canal has been in disuse since 1935.
