• | Immaculate Conception Junior College | Established | 1851 |

Saint Francis Normal School was founded in Oldenburg, Indiana during 1851 by the Sisters of St. Francis Oldenburg, as an all-female normal school, as two-year teacher training schools were then known. Saint Francis Normal School predated the first publicly-funded normal school in Indiana, the State Normal School, by nearly a decade. Saint Francis Normal School was named in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
In 1936 Saint Francis Normal School merged with Immaculate Conception Junior College, at which time the resulting institution was renamed Marian College, where Marian is the adjectival form of Mary, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. During 1937 the portion of Marian College in Oldenburg, Indiana moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1954 Marian College first admitted men, coeducationally.
The motto of Marian College is on its seal: Sedes Sapientiae which is Latin for Seat of Wisdom, which refers to Mary in whose lap rested Jesus Christ, the Wisdom of God.[1]
