Gray County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 22,744. Its county seat is Pampa6. Gray County is named for Peter W. Gray, a lawyer and soldier in the Civil War.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,407 km² (929 mi²). 2,404 km² (928 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 22,744 people, 8,793 households, and 6,049 families residing in the county. The population density was 9/km² (24/mi²). There were 10,567 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 82.15% White, 5.85% Black or African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 8.23% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. 13.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 8,793 households out of which 30.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% were married couples living together, 9.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% were non-families. 28.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the county, the population was spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,368, and the median income for a family was $40,019. Males had a median income of $32,401 versus $20,158 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,702. 13.80% of the population and 11.20% of families were below the poverty line. 17.60% of those under the age of 18 and 9.60% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
