Appanoose County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 13,721. Its county seat is Centerville, Iowa6.

The county was once a major coal-mining region. In recent decades, the state has made an effort to develop manufacturing as an alternate form of employment. Rubbermaid is the county's largest private employer.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,337 km² (516 mi²). 1,285 km² (496 mi²) of it is land and 52 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.89% water. Rathbun Reservoir, created by damming the Chariton River is its main physical feature.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 13,721 people, 5,779 households, and 3,802 families residing in the county. The population density was 11/km² (28/mi²). There were 6,697 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.16% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,779 households out of which 28.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% were married couples living together, 8.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% were non-families. 29.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.89.

23.70% of the people are under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 20.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $28,612, and the median income for a family was $35,980. Males had a median income of $27,449 versus $20,452 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,644. 14.50% of the population and 10.10% of families were below the poverty line. 16.00% of those under the age of 18 and 14.10% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
