History
Burgh Castle is the site of one of several Roman forts that were built as a defence against Saxon raids up the rivers of the east and south coasts of southern Britain (the Saxon Shore). The Roman fort was known as Garrianonum. Its garrison consisted of a detachment of the elite troops of the Stablesian auxiliary cavalry. Nine miles north east is another Roman castle at Caister-on-Sea.
The ruins of Burgh Castle are in the care of English Heritage. They afford good views over Breydon Water, the Halvergate Marshes and Berney Arms windpump.
