History
Ripon, originally known as Murphy's Ferry, was named for Template:USCity. The name is orginated from a city in Yorkshire, England (Ripon).
Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 10,146 people, 3,368 households, and 2,680 families residing in the city. The population density was 955.5/km² (2,473.5/mi²). There were 3,446 housing units at an average density of 324.5/km² (840.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.52% White, 0.34% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.28% Pacific Islander, 8.80% from other races, and 3.94% from two or more races. 18.16% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,368 households out of which 45.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.1% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the city the population was spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $56,979, and the median income for a family was $62,592. Males had a median income of $47,377 versus $25,389 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,978. 6.2% of the population and 4.7% of families were below the poverty line. 6.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Ripon is notable for having the highest per capita number of churches in the Central Valley. Ripon claims to be the 'almond capitol of the world', though many orchards have been felled to make way for development. The voters of Ripon recently voiced opposition to Wal-Mart moving into Ripon, citing Wal-Marts history of economically and cultrally suppressing local communities.
