Mapleton is a city located in Utah County, Utah. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,809.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²). 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Its elevation is 4,700 feet above sea level.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 5,809 people, 1,442 households, and 1,313 families residing in the city. The population density was 243.0/km² (629.4/mi²). There were 1,480 housing units at an average density of 61.9/km² (160.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.80% White, 0.14% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,442 households out of which 54.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 83.8% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 8.9% were non-families. 7.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.02 and the average family size was 4.25.

In the city the population was spread out with 40.1% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $60,985, and the median income for a family was $63,856. Males had a median income of $43,462 versus $22,800 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,496. 5.1% of the population and 3.8% of families were below the poverty line. 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

History

It is a rural area, and more than half the land in the city limits is undeveloped. The area was first settled in 1870, and for a time was known as Union Bench. It started out as an agricultural extension of a small community that is now called Springville. It became known as Mapleton in 1901, and was finally incorporated in 1948.
