Unification Church views of sexuality

The Unification Church views heterosexual marriage as God's ideal (see absolute sex). People are to grow to maturity, becoming "fruitful" (Gen. 1:28), then join in holy matrimony with a member of the opposite sex and "multiply", i.e. have children, for God.

The church regards any sexual contact between people other than that between husband and wife as sinful, a view at odds with much of the Western world since the sexual revolution of the 1960s. The church opposes pre-marital sex, as well as adultery and homosexuality; it categorically rejects gay marriage as an abomination. It asserts that both the avoidance of homosexual acts and the repentance of homosexual desire are both possible and desirable (compare International Healing Foundation).

Good or Evil

While sex is often viewed from either the good side of the spectrum or the evil (Christianity’s perspective vs. Hinduism’s, for example) Unificationism, however, views it from both sides at once. The physical act of sex itself then is neutral, and can be a completely righteous or completely evil practice --all depending on what it is being used as a vehicle for. When sex is a vehicle for lust or when it is engaged in prematurely, before an individual has developed their heart to a worthy point in order to fully utilize sex for its ideal purpose, then it is an evil action. When sex is used as a vehicle for love between a man and a woman who are each other’s eternal spouses, then it is righteous.

Clues That Sex is Good

• It produces life through the conception of child.
• It creates the highest form of physical pleasure.
• It can be viewed as the physical manifestation of love.
• It strengthens the emotional bond between a husband and wife.
• It can be physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy/cleansing.
• It symbolizes, according to the Unification Principle, the very nature of God himself. God is comprised of male and female aspects and is the origin of life. Sex, then, is the union of these two Godly aspects with the purpose of creating life (child).

Clues That Sex is Evil

• It can consume an individual in such way so that he or she seeks immediate gratification through the outlets of rape, pornography, masturbation, adultery, prostitution, etc.
• It is often perverted in such cases as molestation, homosexuality, bestiality, and other harmful or distorted fetishes.
• It has inspired an epidemic of sexually transmitted disease, including the HIV virus and AIDS, responsible for the lives of millions.
• When used in a self-centered light it often inspires emotional discord between partners.
• Has the capability of inspiring jealousy, resentment, ruined friendship, and degradation of one’s self-esteem.
• Can cause much emotional trauma, especially among adolescents and teenagers who are grappling with many other issues at the same time.

Sex in the Spiritual World

Followers of the Unification faith are strongly discouraged from indulging in sex before marriage, but highly encouraged to enjoy its fruits once maturity is reached and union with an eternal spouse achieved. In fact, Unficationism even describes the presence of sex in the spiritual world, where it will no longer be a private or taboo action, but a beautiful engagement which may be indulged in freely and with passion.
