Heavy-ion refers to ion of atom which is usually heavier than carbon. The term is used in conjunction with heavy-ion collisions and high-energy nuclear physics (also sometimes referred to mistakenly as particle physics or high energy physics).

Traditional heavy-ions used in experiments include carbon, silicon, tungsten, gold, lead, and uranium.
