Mare

Mare may mean any of several things:

• A mare is a female horse.
• Hence also applied to objects called horses because they resemble an equine, as in gray mare
• a throw in wrestling

As a placename:

• In geography:
  • Mare is an atoll in the Loyalty Islands; see Mare (island).
  • a compound of various Romanian city names, e.g. Satu Mare, Baia Mare
  • Mare means sea in Latin, Romanian and Italian, where it enters as a component in balnear place names, e.g. Ortona Mare
  • Pissing Mare Falls in Newfoundland
• In astronomy, the term is used for large features on planets, moons, etc. that look like a sea, even if no liquid is believed to have occurred on that celestial body.
  • In particular, a lunar mare is an ancient basaltic lava floodplain on Earth's Moon, usually inside an impact basin.
